The Be Yourself Diet: Simplicity & Long Term Success

As a personal trainer and an all-around health fanatic, I would love to see more Americans eating healthier and losing some of that excess weight. But it’s not about what I would like, it’s about what you’d like. Our busy lives usually don’t allow us to undertake the diets we would ideally like to attempt. Try the “be yourself diet” that I’ve set out below if you’re looking for a great way to lose a belt size or two. A big key of this diet is honesty: Was that one piece of pizza or two? Did I really have one serving of ultra-fatty ice cream or two?

The “be yourself diet” takes your eating behaviors into account and not some unrealistic ideal of what your diet should look like. How many people, after all, did you know who started on the Atkins Diet or the South Beach diet? How are they doing now, are they still on those diets? My guess is they aren’t. They aren’t because who wants to slash carbohydrates almost completely from their diet or pay for expensive foods that may help you lose weight?

Not every day will be diet-perfect, but if you stick it out and stay true to some of the tips I’ll give below, you won’t be disappointed with the loss in weight. Besides, once you’ve reached your target weight, you can have your “cheat” meal (i.e. that second piece of pizza or that second serving of ice cream). In fact, you should have a cheat meal every other week to boost your metabolism. I hope you can hear that sound now, the sound of sweet weight-loss success!

Fortunately, losing weight can be fun if you’re on the proper diet. In fact, losing weight should be fun because your enjoyment of the weight loss process will ensure long-term weight loss success. Here are a few diet tips to help you reach your weight loss goals without sacrificing everything you love to eat:
• If you have a sweet tooth, don’t wait until you’re about to go to bed to eat your favorite doughnut, eat one in the morning or the first half of the day while your metabolism is still high.
• You should know by now that cutting back on soda is a must for losing weight. So if you drink 3 cans of soda per day, cut back to 2 per day for a few weeks while substituting the lost can of soda with water.
• I touched on it briefly above, but if you’re eating pizza or any other high-fat, high-carbohydrate food for dinner in large servers, cut back on your serving size and overall amount. You’ll be amazed at how many calories are in one serving of these types of foods.
• Substitute high-fat and/or high-carbohydrate condiments for their low-fat, low-carbohydrate varieties. You might have to sacrifice a little flavor, but I’ve got some tips for you in an upcoming article that will help appease your flavor-loving side while keeping off the weight.

Doesn’t seem too painful, right? With the “be yourself diet,” you don’t have do anything extreme like give up carbs or entirely restrain yourself from fats. What you must do is become a little more aware of what you’re eating and how you can make tiny modifications in your diet to shed some of that extra weight.

There are no overnight, super-quick fixes, to losing weight unless you don’t mind causing irreparable harm to your body. I’ll assume that’s not your goal. Don’t think you have the time or the discipline to take down the size of your waist a few belt sizes? Well, I’m here to tell you that it’s possible, and fun! But if you’re looking for a quick solution to your weight loss problem, you should start looking elsewhere because only the willing and able survive in the war against excess weight!
